People are not happy because they try so hard trying be someone they think others want them to be—they fail. In the process they lose themselves. They cover up every little remnant of themselves that they forget who they are, and who they used to be. Looking at old pictures they recognize their smiling face, but they feel disjointed as if looking at someone else’s life. Their past becomes a haze, memories no longer clearly defined. We’re not bound to our memories because of the events that unfolded; but rather, our emotions are what bind us to our memories. The reminder of our clear-cut feelings chain us to every single detail of that past. Playing guess-and-check with who we are and who we are supposed to be in order to impress people, who will not even matter to us in ten years, leaves us with confusion. When trying to recall that memory they have no idea what to think—they don’t know how to feel. And so they lose sight of the person they were, in turn also lose a piece of who they are. So why do we focus so hard on trying to please others and disregard ourselves? It’s impossible for you yourself to like every single person in the world. There’s nothing wrong with that. We, as humans, rely heavily on attraction, and not just in the physical beauty sense. You either like vegetables, or you don’t. You either like to read, or you don’t. You either like that shirt, or you don’t. It’s as simple as that. Sure, you may have your reasons why you don’t like that shirt—whether it’s the colour, or the design. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter. At the end of the day you move on. So why should the same concept be any different with human interaction? You either like a person, or you don’t. You may have your own reasons why, for example: they’re an asshole, or they’re too boring for you, or they’re too obnoxious. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter because you don’t care about that person. This doesn’t mean you can’t respect them. They simply don’t need to play an important role in your life. Now take that idea and flip it around. If you so desperately want someone to accept you, but they don’t like you, guess what? Pretending to be someone else is only fooling yourself. You can’t change that person’s taste, regardless of their reasoning against you. Do yourself a favour and move on. Because they’re certainly not wasting any precious seconds dwelling on you. So a guy doesn’t like you. Big deal. Accept that not everyone in the world and their mother is going to accept you for you. The sooner you do this the sooner you’ll be able to find someone who DOES appreciate you for exactly who you are. You don’t need to change yourself, and when you try you will only make yourself unhappy because you will not know who you are. You will lose that individuality you had when you were a free spirited five year old, probably the only moment in your life when you were truest to yourself. People need to understand that surrounding themselves with others who care about them for who they truly are is the key to happiness—not stumbling through life trying to be a million different personas. So let go of it all. Just do it. Stop caring what someone else thinks. I know it’s easier said than done but you just have to allow this to click inside your head. This is who you are. This is everything you have to offer: the good, bad, ugly, weird, or amazing. The world makes the decision to take it or leave it.
